Gear Review: Backcountry Cook Kit

When your in the backcountry your cooking kit is a place you can shave quite a lot of weight but it's also an area of gear that's easy to add a lot of unnecessary items too. Depending on what you are making and how many people are going with you you may need to change your set up around but for 90% of trips I go on all I do is boil water and make pasta and similar dry goods so I've been able to shave my weight down to 13.4 oz and all I need is 4 things, my stove, fuel, a cup, and a utensil.

The stove I carry is the Mountain Safety Research Pocket Rocket. While I haven't tried every backpacking stove in excistance, thus far the pocket rocket is the best I've used in terms of boil time, durability, and weight. About the size of a pocket knife, the MSR is one of the hottest burning canister stoves on the market and you'll be hard pressed to find anyone who's managed to break one.

Powering the pocket rocket is MSR's own mix of isobutane. With any canister stoves, all fuel brands are compatible and for the most part just as good as the next. The only reason I use MSR branded fuel is I get a deal on it.

My cup is a make and model that both my grandpa and I have been carrying for quite some time. There's something to be said for making gear simple and making it right and Snow Peak cookware is a fantastic example of that philosophy in action. Both my grandpa and myself have been carrying various items from them for a while now but my current cup/pot is their Ti-Single 600 Wall Cup. The perfect size for all solo tasks it weighs nothing and is practically indestructible. In addition to durability and weight savings titanium also provides significant protection against corrosion.

Finally, gotta have something to do the actual eating with and my weapon of choice is from snowpeak again. The titanium spork is a backpacker staple and many companies make equally good variations. I like snowpeak though because they make theirs in green!

Hope this gave you some good ideas for a backcountry cook/mess kit. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns direct them to my instagram and if y'all want to hear me talk about anything in particular send me a message.

Stay adventurous folks!
